Happy Heart Health Month!

In honor of February being Heart Health Month, let’s talk about heart healthy habits for our seniors. The risk for heart disease does not decrease as we age and there are plenty of ways to keep your heart in great shape throughout the entirety of your life.

Get the right amount of exercise. This means that you should meet a goal of at least thirty minutes of exercise almost every day of the week. If that sounds daunting, just remember that it doesn’t all have to be done at once.

If you smoke, it’s high time to quit.

Eat a heart healthy diet. What exactly is a heart healthy diet, you ask? It’s a diet that is heavy on fresh fruits and vegetables, and light on saturated fat, salt and foods containing high amounts of cholesterol, like fatty meats.

Watch your numbers. Get regular checkups to monitor health conditions that affect your heart, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, and also make sure they are under control, with medication if your doctor deems necessary.

Limit your alcohol intake. Excess alcohol consumption can worsen health conditions that contribute to heart disease, like blood pressure, arrhythmias and high cholesterol levels.

Minimize stress. Stress can compound many heart disease risks that seniors already face, seek out healthy outlets to relieve stress and lower your heart disease risk.

Watch your weight. Additional pounds can add up to increased heart disease risk, maintaining a healthy body weight will greatly help reduce your risk.

Working with your doctor can help keep health problems under control. It’s never too late to begin living a heart healthy lifestyle.
