18 Things to Ask Before Hiring a Homecare Agency

  1. How long has your company been in business?

Katrix LLC, the parent company of Katrix Home Care & Concierge Services and ExPO Signature Home Care (circa 2008), was established in 2016. Our team has several years of experience working as a full-service staffing agency dealing directly with healthcare facilities, veterans, the handicapped, and private & insured patients.

Katrix is managed by Dr. Kate Okusanya RN, DNP, ANP, BC — a trained and experienced professional, and our Director of Nursing. She has over thirty years of nursing experience in various hospitals and outpatient care settings, including home care. As a Nurse Practitioner, she has conducted House Call Assessments and provided primary care to the geriatric population.

Our team deeply understands the concerns and travails of seniors needing care, as well as the frustrations of family members & loved ones undergoing stress due to the poor quality of care (or lack thereof) being provided by unqualified caregivers. To address these concerns, we built a team of dedicated, empathetic caregivers who are committed to making a difference.

  2. Does your state require licensing of in-home care companies?

New Jersey strongly prefers licensed in-home care companies. Katrix is licensed through the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, a US non-profit health care accrediting organization. You can search our accreditation details here.

  3. Are you bonded and insured?

Yes, Katrix is fully bonded, licensed, and insured.

  4. How in-depth are your criminal and background checks?

At Katrix, all home health aides are subject to extensive criminal, background, and reference checks. In addition, our care staff members are licensed with the State of NJ and must supply copies of their license upon hiring. We also offer an in-house training program for new home health aides to be licensed with the State of NJ.

  5. Does your company have a Licensed Vocational Nurse or RN on staff?

At any given time, there are two or more licensed Registered Nurses on staff providing home care services. Our nurses are crucial to our company in overseeing patients, supervising staff, identifying safety hazards, recognizing symptoms, observing special diets, and staff training. Our staff training includes emergency management, as well as infection control and universal precautions.

  6. How do you select your employees?

Our staff is put through a series of testing including a comprehensive interview process, during which we not only evaluate their competency and professional skills, but also their compassion towards others and their passion for healthcare. In addition, we perform several background checks and reference checks prior to hiring.

  7. Do you provide training for your caregivers? If so, what kind?

We offer an online-based CHHA Training program and an online CNA Conversion Program. With the CHHA Training Program, nurses will need to attend classroom training for the three-day classroom clinical at the conclusion of the online portion of the program. The CNA Conversion Program requires no classroom time; nurses just need to take the State Board Examination at the conclusion of the course.

Training for the CHHA Training Program is a total of 76 hours (60 hours online training, 16 hours classroom clinical.) The State Board Exam is taken on the third day of the classroom clinical.

The CNA Conversion Program consists of 10 hours of online training and completion of the State Board Exam.

  8. What is the company’s replacement policy or guarantee?

While our company works carefully to find the perfect home health aide for each client, we do understand that there may be rare times that a client will request someone new. We are more than happy to work with our clients to place a caregiver that they feel is the perfect fit.

  9. Would you mind providing me with references?

Our company is more than happy to provide references from present and past clients. You can also find references on the Testimonials Tab of our website.

  10. How often do you evaluate and update a client’s written plan of care?

Our caregivers collaborate with our patients’ doctors to devise a care plan that specifically addresses their needs. We evaluate and update a client’s written plan of care on an as-needed basis as well as per-request.

  11. Are you equipped to handle same-day emergencies?

Yes, we are fully equipped to handle same-day emergency requests. Our nurses are well-trained and prepared to act in the event of an emergency.

  12. Are after-hours phone calls answered by one of your staff members or are they routed to an answering service?

Our after-hours phone calls are answered by one of our staff members. If you cannot reach a Katrix representative, simply leave a message and we will follow up as soon as possible. We can be reached at (973) 585–4229.

  13. Can you send me information describing your services and fees?

We would be happy to provide you with any information needed to help you with your decision process. You can find more information on the Services Tab of our website, through our Services Blog Post, or by reaching out to us at (973) 585–4229.

  14. What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept most forms of payment. For more information about specific forms of payment, please contact us at (973) 585–4229.

  15. Do you charge different rates for nights, weekends and holidays?

Before services are rendered, rates are negotiated with clients and their trusted care representatives. Rates for nights, weekends, and holidays are discussed and agreed upon before we initiate services of any kind.

  16. Do you accept long-term care insurance? If so, do you bill the insurance company directly or do clients pay you and then get reimbursed?

Yes, we accept most long-term insurances, and we bill insurance companies directly. We are also contracted with the following: Medicaid, WellCare, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield/NJ Health, Veteran Administration in NJ, CareCentrix (catering multiple insurances like Cigna), and private citizens.

  17. Can we set up a time to meet to discuss the details of my care needs?

Yes, absolutely! Katrix would be more than willing to come to your home or whichever setting you prefer to discuss our in-home care assistance services. Reach out to us through our email address at admin@katrixhomecare.com, book an appointment online at katrixhomecare.com, or over the phone at (973) 585–4229.

  18. How soon can we begin?

Once we receive the relevant script and referral by fax, phone, or email from a Case Manager, Social Worker, or the Individual them self, we will execute a RN assessment in 24–48 hours and commence full care afterward. Included in our offering, we provide free access to a consultation with a seasoned Nurse Practitioner at no extra charge.
